Private Pilot Requirements

  • To begin training you must be at least 14 years old.

  • At age 16 you will be able to go solo.

  • At age 17 you will be able to apply for your NPPL (M)

  •  Usually no medical examination is required.

  • A simple self certification form filled in online is all that is required

  •  You must log a minimum of 25 hours of flight training time 10 hours of which will be solo flight under the supervision of your instructor.

  •  These are the absolute minimum training hours but most people find  they require a few more hours flight time to reach the required standard.

  •  There are 5 written exams as well as a flying skills test.

  • There is no maximum age limit and even if you have some medical conditions you may still be able to obtain a restricted licence which will allow you to fly locally in good weather conditions.

As part of your training you will be taught how to use the radio to make basic radio calls around the airfield. As a student pilot it is legal for you to use the radio but once you aquire your pilots licence you will need to have a seperate licence called the Flight Radiotelephony Operators Licence abreviated to FRTOL.

The training for this licence can be done with our local instructor/examiner

We run regular courses throughout the year and can do small groups of two or three people or one to one instruction.

Most people are very wary of using the radio at first but you will soon be sounding like a professional pilot.

How long Will It Take ?

All the training is done at a pace to suit you.

Most people aim to do a one hour lesson every week or two and spread the training over around 12 months, this also spreads the cost as well.

During the winter months it is a good idea to study for the written exams and if the weather is not suitable for your flying lesson the time can be put to good use by getting one of the exams under your belt.

At Fly Scotland we have a dedicated briefing room fully equipped with everything you need to settle down for private study or do one of the exams in undisturbed peace and quiet.

During the winter months we have regular ground school subject classes usually groups of 6 people maximum. The classes are run at weekend or evenings and are either 1 or 2 days in duration depending on the subject.

The cost of the class includes the written exam and are individually priced.
